Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Arms smuggling has been a significant driver of insecurity in various parts of Nigeria, particularly in the North West, including Kaura Namoda LGA, Zamfara State. The proliferation of illicit firearms has enabled criminal groups, including bandits, to carry out violent attacks, kidnappings, and robberies, contributing to the breakdown of law and order. According to Musa et al. (2023), the smuggling of arms from neighboring countries, coupled with weak border control, has intensified the activities of armed groups in Zamfara State. The consequences of arms smuggling on insecurity are profound, as it fuels organized criminal activities and exacerbates the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies. This study aims to examine the impact of arms smuggling on insecurity in Kaura Namoda, focusing on the link between the flow of illicit weapons and the rise in criminal violence.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Arms smuggling remains a critical issue in Kaura Namoda LGA, where the influx of illegal firearms has significantly contributed to the rise in criminal activities. These weapons are often used by bandits to carry out attacks on rural communities, resulting in loss of lives, displacement, and disruption of economic activities. Despite various government efforts to curb the smuggling of arms, the practice persists, further complicating the security situation in the area.
